This ethnic group is known as the Black Mong because their traditional costume, made of hemp, is dyed midnight blue. Here's a preparation of the indigo dye used. The indigo plant, which they identified along the trail, isn't blue! Many of the women we saw had blue arms up to their elbows due to working with this dye.
