Around the year 530, Saint Brendan the Navigator climbed Ireland's second-tallest mountain to see if he could see the western "Land of Promise of the Saints." The mountain is 953 meters but needed to be 710,000 meters for him to have seen Newfoundland. Undeterred, he and his monks set off anyway, and they may have made it to America five hundred years before Leif Erikson.
